Girls dressed in what seems to be common Halloween costumes today.
In light of Halloween I was going to do an easy how-to for costumes. However, I’ve decided instead to share what seems to be a yearly Halloween occurrence for me on the costume hunt.
Call me crazy, but I am one of those girls who actually enjoy Halloween. Candy, costumes, haunted houses, Hocus Pocus, sign me up! Every year, my parents went all out decorating every inch of our house. My dad went so far as to get a fog machine and giant blowup spider that hung precariously over our garage – needless to say we took the cake in our neighborhood.
Every year was a huge deal coming up with what I wanted to be. I was fond of making my costume, which with Ragstock now on campus has become increasingly appealing. However, last year I decided that I wanted to buy an actual costume to reuse over my college years. I decided to go with a Disney princess costume because come on, it’s a classic, am I right?
I snagged one on sale and brought it home to my dorm room to try on.
“So were you going for Playboy Belle?” asked my roommate.
Okay I get it. The infamous line from Mean Girls had it right. Slutty Halloween costumes are to be expected. But this costume literally did not cover my behind.
Fast forward to this year. I decided to give it one more shot. I walked into Party City and pointed to the Minnie Mouse costume dress I had seen online earlier in the day. Same deal with a white petticoat to boot. Maybe it’s a Disney thing?
There has to be a line somewhere between sexy and slutty. If you have a great bod go ahead and show it off! That doesn’t mean I need to know what color thong you have on today. I would just love to hear “Wow, she looks great!” instead of “Wow, how trashy is that costume?” Maybe I’m crazy.
If you’re considering buckling down and dropping some cash on a legitimate costume, just be aware, you may have better luck heading to the nearest thrift shop (Macklemore approved). I picked up high-waisted jean shorts, blue suspenders, a yellow snapback, and t-shirt and some circle glasses and made myself a Minion costume that didn’t hurt my wallet and doesn’t make me look completely ridiculous. It’s possible to find a happy medium between slut-tastic and frump-zilla.
